An extraordinary piece of American numismatic history, this 1976 National Bicentennial Gold Medal was produced by the United States Mint to commemorate the 200th anniversary of American independence. This massive 3-inch issue represents the largest and rarest gold version of the official National Bicentennial Medal.

Struck in .900 fine gold (21.6 karat, commonly referred to as 22K), the medal measures approximately 3 inches (76.2 mm) in diameter. These impressive medals were struck only to order and individually numbered, with the U.S. Mint recording sales of just 424 examples. This particular medal is individually numbered 351 on the edge.

The obverse, designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro, features a dramatic high-relief depiction of the Statue of Liberty, encircled by 50 stars and flanked by the dates 1776–1976, together with the ideals “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” The reverse features the Great Seal of the United States, surrounded by the inscriptions “American Revolution Bicentennial” and “We the People.”

Originally offered at an extraordinary $4,000 in 1976, the three-inch gold medal was the premier issue of the National Bicentennial Medal program. Its combination of substantial gold content, extremely limited distribution, individual numbering and official U.S. Mint origin makes it one of the most impressive modern American commemorative medals.

This example retains its original American cherry-wood presentation case with velvet lining as well as the original blue outer box, adding considerably to its presentation and collector appeal.
